Helta Skelta - LP

Some might remember these guys dropping a great demo tape over a year and a half ago and then mysteriously disappearing. Well thankfully Perth's Helta Skelta have returned with a new self released LP. The fact that they've covered both SSD and now 70s Perth band The Victims shows the mix of influences going on here. Definitely one of the better Australian releases to come out this year. Only 250 copies were pressed up by Pirates Press with the first 20 coming with a cassette too. Grab one here for only $16 plus postage, that's gotta be the cheapest 12" in Australia! Keeping it affordable for the punx.

J Mascis - Circle 7"

Following on from his excellent solo album released earlier this year, J Mascis has dropped this 2 song 7" upon us. The A side is a cover Edie Brickell's "Circle" which I'd heard before from the Daytrotter Sessions and absolutely loved. Such a perfect song for him to cover you would think it was one of his own. Lyrically it just suits his depressive personality to a T. On the B side is "I've Been Thinking", a track leftover from the Several Shades of Why sessions. You can get this sludgy coloured vinyl now from Sub Pop.

Deathcharge from Portland started out in the late 90s worshipping Discharge as you can tell by the name but have since developed into more of a Deathrock band. For those unfamiliar with the genre it's basically a punk/goth hybrid sound pioneered by bands like Christian Death, 45 Grave and T.S.O.L. Now apart from the aforementioned bands there are very few decent Deathrock records out there and especially not modern ones. Here's an exception! This is a seriously addictive record that seems to be melted to my turntable at the moment. Goth music you can bang to! I'm pretty sure members of Hellshock and Lebenden Toten play in this band too. Released this year by Unseen Forces on 180gram 45rpm vinyl. 1st press sold out and second press probably getting close. Available from Unseen Forces, Distort Reality and a few other distros.

Corrupted / Black Army Jacket - Split 7"

Here's one of Corrupted's earlier records from 1997. The sleeve is printed on newspaper paper and I have no idea what any of the text means as I can't read Spanish, though I am intrigued. These guys have a fuckload of vinyl out there but unfortunately their last few full lengths, including this year's "Garten Der Unbewusstheit", have not made it onto the format. This of course is mainly due to excessive song length. The restrictions of the 7" format have lead them to write some pretty crushing sludge songs like the one on this release.

There's a really great Corrupted track on this 7" but like most splits I could do without the Cripple Bastards side and their terrible artwork. Hopefully one day Corrupted will release a collection of all their split tracks together. This came out in 2002 on H.G. Fact Records.

Here's one of the better demos to come out of Australia this year. Melbourne's Shit Weather play feedback drenched sludgy power violence. If that's your thing then I recommend giving this a listen. Amebix - Sonic Mass

Amebix are back with a new album, the first since 1987s Monolith. That's a hell of a long time between recordings so of course it doesn't sound like their earlier material but after giving it many repeat listens it's starting to grow on me. Sounding more like an industrial rock band than their crusty past. It's getting a lot of comparisons to later era Killing Joke and I can even hear a hint of Ministry but there's still the distinctive Amebix sound intact. This change in direction will probably divide their fans but I suggest you give it a few spins to digest before deciding. 1st press is on red vinyl, available now at Easy Action Records.

Zola Jesus - Conatus

I've been spinning the latest LP from Zola Jesus non stop since it's arrival. Following the same direction as last years Stridulum II with a less noise more pop sound which I don't mind one bit. I don't delve into much electronic music but for me this record is all about the vocals. What an amazing voice. That being said there's nothing wrong with the sounds Nika sings over it's just her voice is that great I could listen to her sing over anything. I'm even hearing some Nine Inch Nails influence here, especially on the first single "Vessel". Watch the video below. This was put out by Sacred Bones in the US which is where I got this clear version from but it's also been released in Europe by Souterrain Transmissions on 180 gram vinyl. I would suggest forking out the extra for the 180 gram edition as mine is so thin it's almost a flexi! I'll probably buy one too as it looks like this is going to get worn out pretty quick the rate I'm playing it.

Ruinebell is a new project from Lasse (Hooded Menace) and Dopi (Dishammer). Being a huge fan of both those bands, I could not wait to hear this. I was not disappointed. This is some great dark crust in the tradition of Amebix and Axegrinder. Only 2 songs which I'm hoping is just a taster of things to come. Bring on an LP! Doomentia Records made 500 of these on clear vinyl housed in the heaviest gatefold sleeve I've ever seen for a 7". You can get one here.

This is the first 7" from Polish crusties Filth Of Mankind. Released in 1999 by Scream Records. I bought this off Discogs which I've never tried before. It ended up being a positive experience as the seller turned out to be Pawel the guitarist. I can't imagine there'd be many of these left so buy one here if you're keen.

Worship - Dooom

Fucked Up Mad Max did leave behind some unfinished recordings with fellow band member The Doommonger. These were years later resurrected and added to, the result was this epic double LP released by Painiac Records. This is even better than the first LP in my opinion and well worth tracking down. The new Worship line up are currently working on a 3rd Lp which I'm pretty keen to hear.

Worship - Last Vinyl Before Doomsday

Worship are a heavily depressing funeral doom band out of Germany. One of the members actually jumped off a bridge to his death not long after this was recorded giving true meaning to the term funeral doom. This is a reissue of their first LP courtesy of Doom-Mantra Records in an edition of 666 copies.

Filth Of Mankind - The Final Chapter

Filth Of Mankind are a Polish crust band. Named after a Misery song, there's certainly an influence here as well as Amebix of course. Milosz from Morne used to play in this band before he moved to the US which is what prompted me to check this record out. This is some really great dark metallic crust, all lyrics are sang in Polish which I think makes it sound even better. Originally released in 2000 on tape and CD and then pressed to vinyl by Black Water Records in 2006. I managed to score one of the limited copies with neolithic printed cover and maroon/black vinyl out of 200. It's out of print now but worth tracking down if you can find it. Highly recommended!

Nerveskade - Noise Pollution 7"

This is a vinyl pressing of the Nerveskade covers tape. I think I read somewhere that there were only 300 of these made by 540 Records. It's about as barebones as it gets, blank labels and a single sided cover.

Negative Reinforcement - Demo 5"

Coffin Cut Records had 25 of these Perth made lathe cut 5"s made up for the Mindsnare / Ringworm show on the weekend. These sound really fucking good for a demo recording and a lathe cut, I was quite surprised. Negative Reinforcement is a newish Perth band with members of Suffer, Helta Skelta and Lie Cycle playing Metallic Hardcore. Fans of Integrity get it in ya. I was going to put up a link to the last few left for sale but it appears to be sold out already. You can still grab the CD demo here.

Thou - The Archer & The Owle

Yet another Thou release has dropped. This one's a beautifully packaged 6 song EP that clocks in at over 40 minutes. Half the songs are covers, including Nirvana's Something In The Way. Spot glossed gatefold sleeve, 500 grey vinyl and 1500 on red. Get it from Robotic Empire.

Noothgrush - Erode The Person

Parasitic Records have given Noothgrush's 1997 recording the vinyl release it deserved. Up there with Grief and Iron Monkey, these guys and girl made some of the best sludge/doom around. This sounds perfect on the super thick 180 gram vinyl pressing and with only 100 white / 400 black made it's not going to be around long. Highly recommended!

Mindsnare - Hanged Choked Wrists Slit

Mindsnare are a very highly regarded Australian hardcore band that have been around since 1993. I've been searching for a vinyl copy of this for many years and have finally managed to score one. It's such a killer record that I doubt many people would ever part with one if they owned it, which means it very rarely pops up on ebay. Pretty much everyone in the Australian hardcore and metal scenes loves these guys but I don't know how well they're known overseas so I thought I would post this for the international readers out there. This is one of the best Aussie Hardcore albums ever made so seek it out and listen!

Amebix - Knights Of The Black Sun

Knights Of The Black Sun is the first new song to be heard from the reformed Amebix. It's been released as a 280 gram single sided 12" with etched B-side by Profane Existence which is very over the top but the sound quality is pretty rad. I must state that I am a huge Amebix fan and have been eagerly anticipating this new material. When I first heard this I really wanted to like it and kept playing it over and over trying to figure out if I did. I've had this for a couple of weeks now and I'm still undecided. The first half of the song I'm not really into but the last half I'm starting to enjoy. This is only one of nine songs off the new album Sonic Mass so hopefully the best is still to come.

Kromosom - 8 Tracks 12"

Just got the latest 12" from Kromosom and after repeat listens I'd say this will probably be the Australian release of the year. This just fucking punishes! There's been quite a line up change since the demo recording with only half the members staying on and Yeap now taking on vocal duties. Half of the songs are from the demo but with this re-recording they sound even more crushing. This is a split release between 4 labels from 4 different countries so you should be able to find one in a distro near you.

Dead Language - LP

Here's the debut record from Power Violence supergroup Dead Language. Members involved also play in Iron Lung, Walls, Pig Heart Transplant, Solutions and No Comment. It's hard to read exactly who does what as the lyrics, credits etc are all printed inside the sleeve. I think the whole concept for the artwork must have been to make everything hard to read as all the text on the front and back sleeve is a clear gloss. This is a nice smelling cover too, not that I usually sniff my records but I did notice this smelt rather pleasant and reminded me of trading cards I used to collect as a kid. It sounds just as good as it smells, damn good in fact. 20 minutes of the best modern power violence you're likely to hear this year! If you're into any of the aforementioned bands then you should go get this from Iron Lung Records now.

Thou / Cower - Split 12"

Thou dropped 3 releases in the last few weeks and this is one of them. Even though this is a split, the aesthetics are still very Thou. I've noticed this with most of their splits that the artwork and font used seem to be similar throughout their releases, regardless of whether another band is on the other side. Just an observation after accumulating so many of their records. Thou's side has 4 new songs which includes a Cower cover that clocks in at just over a minute. I think that's got to be the shortest song they've ever recorded! Nothing new here really just more quality sludgery. I tried to get into the Cower side but it just wasn't my thing. You get that with splits sometimes, can't please everyone. Vendetta Records made 1000 copies with 100 being on red and 900 on black. Buy it here and download here.

Here's a very nicely packaged demo tape from UK Hardcore band Stab. Painkiller Records did a US dub of this recently which sold out in a couple of hours. That pissed me off but I managed to find this original sitting in a distro so that's alright. Blown out, angry straight edge hardcore. Good stuff.

I probably didn't need another copy of this but it's such a great demo I'm worried my tape player will chew it up eventually. Total Fucker Records have made 50 hand numbered "official bootlegs" on home dubbed tapes. If you missed out on a first dub here's your chance. RSR recently put out this 2 track 5" by Extortion. Both songs are out takes from the 2007 Sick recordings so this is classic Perth line up here. Coma is a slow dirgy instrumental and Decompose is a ripper of a track that could have easily been left on the Sick LP. Only 300 of these little guys were pressed, all on black vinyl. 100 copies came with limited Chaos In Tejas covers but to make things even more frustrating for Extortion collectors there were half printed on red sleeves and the other half on orange sleeves. Add that to the never ending list!

Morne - Asylum

Morne have released this epic new album of atmospheric crust. I have given this many repeat listens already and it keeps getting better every time. This is what I was hoping the new Amebix material would sound like! Time will tell with that one but for now this is looking like one of the best for the year. These guys have filled the hole in this genre left behind by Fall Of Efrafa and if you're into that band I would recommend you give this a listen. This is the European edition on Alerta Antifascista. I got in quick with the pre order and scored the white with black haze vinyl limited to 100 copies. There's still black vinyl left at doomrock or you can wait for the US pressing which should be out soon.

Nerveskade / Perdition - Split 7"

Distort Reality have recently put out this split between 2 of the US's greatest noise punks, Portland's Nerveskade and New York's Perdition. Nerveskade blast out 4 songs in a few minutes including a Shitlickers cover. I have recently heard that they have broken up which I'm pretty bummed about. Hopefully there will be some posthumous releases to come as that's fucked if this is their last record! Perdition sound like they take influence from a lot of the same bands as Nerveskade but they've got more of a tougher hardcore style vox. Fucking great stuff. The labels are on the wrong side's of the record for this first press so if you're listening to these bands for the first time you might get confused. The bands used each others drummers for the cover art with pretty hilarious results, that Nerveskade cover is pure gold! Get it here.

Pig Heart Transplant / Blue Sabbath Black Cheer - Split 7"

This split was released a few years ago by Epicene in an edition of 300 copies. I managed to find one rotting away in a distro, as of this posting there is still some left so go here if interested. Each band lays down 1 song of menacing noise/power electronics. The Pig Heart Transplant song was on the cd version of Hope You Enjoy Heaven but not the vinyl version so I suppose that's why it ended up on this split. The packaging is about as minimal as it gets with blank labels and a one sided front sleeve with no info apart from the band names on the obi-strip. A collaboration/split 3xLP between these 2 groups is coming out later this year, should be an interesting release.

Doomentia Records are responsible for this latest split between Hooded Menace and Asphyx. Both bands lay down 1 track each of heavy Death Doom. The Hooded Menace song is from the Never Cross The Dead recording session and is easily just as good as any song off that album. Comes in a super thick gatefold sleeve which is pretty unusual for a 7". 500 copies on black and 500 copies on picture disk all sold out instantly from the label. If you missed out it sucks to be you.

Grief - European Tour 7"

Flesh World have followed up last years demo with another cassette release. I think this band really suits the tape format and this sounds even more blown out and fucked than the first. 2 songs from the demo have been re-recorded here plus 5 new ones. Discharge don't really need an introduction, I'm sure everyone's heard them before though I sometimes wonder if they sell more patches than records these days. Havoc Records have recently repressed 1981's WHY? and 1982's Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing which are the two most worthy of hearing. Looks like the singles are getting reissued next. Clear vinyl was limited to 200 copies and there's 1800 on black. Get them here.

Cold Vomit Records have released this Dry-Rot live recording on a double flexi. The cover is a folded X-Ray and it comes with an insert that doesn't fit in the sleeve, a short story and what appears to be a screen printed page out of the bible. This is probably the closest I'll get to experiencing this band live and it sounds like a whole lot of fun. They play a cover of U2 and then call them poseurs later on haha. Finland's Hooded Menace and Washington DC's Ilsa split this 12" in half with one track each of their respective style of doom. I bought this for the Hooded Menace side but the Ilsa side is getting equal spins. The amazing artwork by Ilsa drummer Joshua Brettell makes me glad this was pressed on the larger 12" format so you can really take in all the detail. Only 500 copies were pressed and it's apparently nearly all sold out so head over to Contagion Releasing before it's too late.

Midnight Funeral have pressed up 100 of these with screen printed chipboard sleeves and they look pretty sweet. The Lone album is now all on side A at 33RPM and the B side has the Blood Wars tape. These are in my opinion Suffer's 2 best releases and worth the purchase for the Blood Wars tracks on vinyl. I don't think this will be around long so grab one from Midnight Funeral quick smart. Iron Lung Records recently put together this mixtape of bands and friends of the label, 20 bands with 1 unreleased track each. Like any good mixtape this has a really diverse collection of songs on it. The stand outs for me are the tracks from Slices, Solutions, Cold Sweat, Walls and Mind Eraser but if you've been reading this blog for a while that would come as no surprise. This was worth buying for the unreleased Cold Sweat track alone, it's a live recording of them covering Black Flag's "I've Heard It Before". Of course the Iron Lung track rules but at 15 seconds long you could almost miss it if you weren't paying attention.

Iron Lung Records have a stack of new releases coming out that I can't wait to hear. Unfortunately if you haven't already got this one, you missed out. All 500 copies sold out pretty quick. You can of course listen to the whole tape below or download from Terminal Escape.

Rowland S. Howard vs The Devastations - Autoluminescent 7"

This came out in 2005 somewhere in between his first and second solo album. Recorded with The Devastations as a backing band, it has a different version of "Autoluminescent" (originally on Teenage Snuff Film) and a Velvet Underground cover on the B side. The original solo version of "Autoluminescent" is much better than the one here, it's just lacking the dreamy feel of the original and I have no idea why he decided to record it again. It also rather annoyingly has the A side on 45 rpm and the B side on 33 rpm. Still it's Fucking Rowland S. Howard so I had to have it. Comes in a gatefold sleeve and limited to 1000 numbered copies. I've seen this sell on ebay recently for $60 US but it is still available at Munsterrama so get it there.

Here's the Record Store Day reissue of Hormoaning limited to 6000 copies which may seem like a lot but for a big band like Nirvana that's a pretty small amount. Originally released for their 1992 Australian Tour and then heavily bootlegged ever since, this is the first official pressing in nearly 20 years. If it wasn't for their cover of D7 on here I may not have checked out the Wipers. I'd actually credit Nirvana for getting me into a lot of great bands when I was younger as Kurt always spoke so highly of bands like The Raincoats, Melvins and Pixies among others and I was always hungry for new music back then.

There's been so many reissues lately that I've managed to get quite a nice coloured Nirvana collection together in a short amount of time. They just to need to repress Muddy Banks of Wishkah now.

White Static Demon - Decayed Cassette

White Static Demon is yet another project from the extremely prolific Justin K Broadrick. Best known for his work with Godflesh but here is something closer to his early recordings as Final. Really evil sounding Dark Ambient / Power Electronics made with all analogue equipment and the occasional distorted vocals. Originally only released digitally but Utech Records made 100 cassette versions. As of writing this there is still some left, buy here.

True Widow - As High As The Highest Heaven And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth

This is the latest LP from True Widow and one of the longest album titles I've ever seen. True Widow are a 3 piece Stonegaze band from Texas. Stonegaze being a cross between Stoner and Shoegaze which is a pretty spot on description of their music. Think Earth mixed with My Bloody Valentine and that will give you some idea. I've only recently discovered these guys and I can already say that this will be on my end of year top 10 list. Can't recommend them enough, get it from Kemado before they're all gone. Limited to 2000 hand numbered copies.

Sun Splitter - II

This album is killer! 4 tracks of heavy doom/industrial/noise spread over 30+ minutes of tape. Originally released on cdr but Land Of Decay did the right thing and gave it an analogue release on pro-dubbed high quality chrome cassettes. Sun Splitter use drum machines and samples without sounding electronic at all. There's two guitarists and a hell of a lot of riffs as well as a vocalist that goes from chanting to blackened growls. There was only 100 copies made and they're all gone from the label but if you're quick you can get one here. Highly recommended.

After having Locrian's latest LP spinning on my turntable for the last few weeks I'm finally getting around to posting about it. It's not easy to describe the sounds on this record as there's quite a mix of genres all melting together to make music that's both dark and beautiful at the same time. The cover art by Justin Bartlett looks exactly like it sounds, which is what album covers should do. Fans of ambient, drone, noise and black metal would be best off getting this into your eardrums as soon as possible. LP available now from Utech Records.

Here's my favorite track "Obsidian Facades" as well as the new video for "Elevations and Depths". Give them a listen or even better play both at the same time for a bizarre mix.

Tad - 8-Way Santa

Here's another score from the record fair on the weekend. Tad's second album from 1991. This one's an Australian pressing on Waterfront Records, red vinyl. The band got sued for this cover art as they had used a found photo without permission of the couple in it. Later pressings have a photo of the band on the sleeve instead. They also got sued by Pepsi for using their logo on the 7" sleeve for Jack Pepsi, the single off this album. That's a lot of bad luck. If you haven't heard these guys before they were one of the lesser known bands in the 90s Seattle grunge scene. They've got a similar vibe to the other bands like Mudhoney, Soundgarden etc.

Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me

I spent a few hours digging through crates and crates of records at a collectors fair on the weekend. This is just one of the many gems I found. Dinosaur Jr's classic second album from 1987 on SST Records. The very first pressing of this album still had the Dinosaur title on them but were later recalled after a lawsuit made them change the name to Dinosaur Jr. My copy has the Jr title but seems to still be a very early 87 pressing on clear pink vinyl. I don't usually go out of my way to chase original pressings if there's a cheaper reissue available but in this case I scored it for $10. There's a certain nostalgic feel to original pressings though. This record was bought when the album first came out, traveled around, maybe passed hands a few times, played at parties or in some stoners bedroom and now it's getting cranked on my stereo in 2011.

Lebanon - Overdose/Overload 7"

Lebanon is a new band out of Portland with two members from From Ashes Rise, Derek Willman on bass and Brad Boatright (also of Deathreat & Warcry) on Vocals/Guitar. This is their debut 7" out now on Southern Lord, the grey splatter vinyl is a limited mailorder version. They obviously sound a little like From Ashes Rise with the same distinctive vocalist but with a total Motorhead influence mixed in. I imagine fans of their label mates Black Breath would probably be into this Hardcore/Metal hybrid. Looking forward to what comes next from these guys.

J Mascis - Several Shades Of Why

J Mascis has just released his first solo studio album on Sub Pop Records. Known mostly as the singer songwriter for Dinosaur Jr but some of you may be familiar with his drumming for Deep Wound, Witch and Upsidedown Cross. This is an intimate album of mainly stripped back acoustic songs, not usually the type of music I listen to but any fan of Dinosaur Jr is not going to be disappointed here. J seems to be at the top of his game lately with Dinosaur Jr's last album being one of their best so far and now this incredible solo record. I already know for sure that this will be in my best of 2011 list. The LP comes on purple vinyl in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, Marq Spusta's artwork is just perfect.

Winter - Into Darkness

I have wanted a copy of this for a long time but it was just too expensive to get an original. Thanks to Southern Lord it's now back in print and like most of their releases they've gone all out. Super thick gatefold sleeve, 180 gram vinyl and an 18 page booklet with loads of old flyers and artwork. It's interesting to see the type of shows they played back then, sometimes alongside metal bands like Sepultura and Death and other nights at a crust/punk benefit with Nausea. They don't really fit either bill but certainly share elements of those genres. When I try to describe them to someone I'll usually say they sound like Amebix played at half the speed. This came out over 20 years ago and is still some of the slowest heaviest doom ever recorded. If you haven't heard Winter before, nows your chance.

Men's Interest - More War 7"

This one came out last year but I've only just got my hands on a copy. There's hardly any information out there for Men's Interest and no credits or song titles on this record either. From what I can gather they have at least one member from Mind Eraser, maybe more and that is most definitely Shaun from Cold Sweat on vocals. It's all a bit "mysterious" but I guess they just want the music to speak for itself. That's fine by me as this is some ripping dirty ass hardcore in a similar vein to Cold Sweat. My copy's a first press with silver cover of 500. Second press with gold cover is out now on Home Invasion.

Crime Desire - Alone In A Dream

Alone In A Dream is the latest 5 song EP from Crime Desire. I initially bought this record after reading a write up describing it as deathrock influenced hardcore with Gitane Demone from Christian Death doing some guest vocals. Having not heard any of Crime Desire's previous releases I guess I was expecting this to sound a little bit more goth, kinda like T.S.O.L. or Christian Death. I can hear a slight goth/deathrock influence but it's still pretty straight up hardcore, maybe it's the gruff vocals that make me think that. I actually really dig the vocals and I'm glad this wasn't a Rozz Williams impersonation gone bad. Of course the wailings of Gitane Demone and her daughter Zara definitely add something different to the mix here, especially on the final track "Hell Of Death". After a few spins and getting over the fact it wasn't what I was expecting, I'm really loving this record. Recorded onto analogue tape and mastered straight to vinyl so it sounds like it's meant to. Saga Demos is sadly the last release from Iron Age. Two songs recorded in their practice space for the unfinished album " Fate In The Shadow Of Eluvimal". It sounds like they were continuing in the same direction as their previous LP "The Sleeping Eye". Epic thrashy metal with the catchiest fucking riffs that make me headbang in my car, lounge room or wherever else I may be. This just devastates me that there will be no more. Monolith has finally been reissued on vinyl by Back On Black and they've done a brilliant job. Nice gatefold cover and 180 gram clear vinyl limited to 1000 copies. It originally came out in 1987 as their final album but that is no longer the case. Amebix have made an announcement that they will be releasing a new album in September this year. Lets hope it lives up to their legacy.

Cold Sweat - Blinded

This has been a major want of mine for a while now so I'm very happy to have got my hands on an original. As far as I know Cold Sweat only released 2 LPs, with this one being their second from 2004. If there's anything else out there someone let me know. They played really angry chaotic hardcore like nothing else around at the time and still shit on most hardcore bands around today. The members from this line up went on to form Walls which is basically the same band with a different singer. Shaun the singer is currently doing vocals for Mens Interest.

Barghest - Barghest Cassette

Barghest are a black metal band from Baton Rouge (USA) with two members from doom band Thou, one current and one ex member. Of course the Thou tag was what sparked my interest but Barghest are doing their own thing here with little similarity to Thou apart from both bands shredding. I think Thou fans will like this but it's fast black metal as apposed to the slowed down blackened doom they're known for. This is a cassette version of their first LP, vinyl should be coming out soon which I will also be grabbing. Put out by Big Mountain Tapes with a patch in an edition of 100 hand numbered copies. Already sold out from the label so either hit up the band or wait for the vinyl. I highly recommend you give these guys a listen, I've played it twice in a row today and it's blowing my mind!

Nerveskade - Acid Attack 7"

First 7" from Portland noise punx Nerveskade. Not as good as their other 7"s mainly due to the vocals being a bit low in the mix. Don't get me wrong this is still a fucking ripper record it's just the split with D-Clone kills it. One of the best record covers I've seen in long time, this is what a punk record should look like. They put the AAAAAGH bit in the lyric sheet too which made me laugh. I'm pretty nuts about this band at the moment and usually can't get through a day without giving them a spin. A new 12" EP is coming real soon and if it's anything like the D-Clone split my head will explode. AAAAAGH!

The B-Side has a really weird electronic bit at the end that I mistook for one of the neighbors music at first. I'd like to hear their latest 12" on Prank to get a better idea what they're all about. Nuclear Sex Addict were a short lived band from Melbourne that only played a few shows and released this one 7 track demo. Two of the members went onto form Kromosom so if you liked their latest demo you'll probably dig this too. Noisy Japanese hardcore played with maximum feedback and distortion. Raw as piss recording, fucking great demo. Wish they had done more. Rescued From Life Records are pressing this on a 7" soon so keep an eye out for that.

Two favorite bands of mine with new material, fucking great cover art and quality pressing. I've currently played it 5 times in a row tonight and can't get enough. Only problem is which band to file it under on the record shelf. I'm tempted to say this is the best Mammoth Grinder recording to date but I'll have to think about that a bit longer, definitely up there. This is the first Hatred Surge recording with new vocalist Rahi from Insect Warfare replacing Faiza. I always thought the dual male/female vocals on earlier HS records gave them a really intense sound and that's what drew me to them in the first place. Don't get me wrong, the new stuff still kills it, it's just a different beast now. At least I can still get my Faiza fix from Mindless.

The red vinyl was for the first 100 pre orders and 400 black copies were also pressed but it all sold out straight away. Keep your eyes peeled on Cyclopean Records for a second pressing coming soon. In the mean time you can listen to the whole record below.

Moss - Never Say Live Cassette

When Moss announced there would be a second press of their live cassette I jumped at the chance to grab a copy. Soon as it arrived in the mail I shoved it straight in the tape deck and without even hearing a second of it, my tape player chewed it up! Definitely one of the cassette formats biggest downfalls. I managed to order another copy before it sold out, at least it wasn't an expensive purchase or I would've been pissed.

Recorded live in Soho with a Minidisk recorder in the crowd but with a lot of time spent on mastering it to sound decent then pressed onto pro dubbed chrome tapes. Four songs adding up to nearly an hour of live doom. Second press purple edition is limited to 150 copies. Mine came with all 3 cover variants, the orange one's first press and the yellow one's the tour cover. Split release by Buried & Forgotten Productions and Witch Sermon.

Drowning Horse

Drowning Horse play painfully slow heavily depressing doom similar to Burning Witch and Corrupted. Featuring members from much faster Perth hardcore bands Suffer, Extortion and Negative Reply. This is their discography so far, both can be purchased from their bigcartel store.

Drowning Horse / Gore Crow Tones - Split 7"
The Drowning Horse side was recorded in 2008 but this took forever to come out and was only released last year. I've never heard of Gore Crow Tones before but from what I gather it's a project from Melbourne. Their track kinda reminded me a little of Swans / Godflesh with it's repetitive dirgy thuds. Pretty cool stuff. Put out by Eco Tone Records and limited to 220 copies.

Drowning Horse - Live 26.06.2010 Cassette

4 songs recorded live at Dream Studios. This is a slightly different line up to the 7" as the recordings are about 2 years apart. I was at this show and it was bloody loud, which is probably why this recording turned out so well. Usually I'm not a fan of live releases because so many of them are shit recordings but this is a quality recording and I highly recommend it. Self released pro dubbed purple tapes.

Lie Cycle - Demo

Lie Cycle are a sludgy crust hardcore band from Perth, Western Australia. Another great band from my local scene and this is their first demo tape. Limited to only 20 copies so if you want one I'd go grab one of the last copies from Coffin Cut Records before it sells out.

Warthreat - Demo

Warthreat are from Perth, Western Australia and play noisy as hell d-beat with lots of echo on the vocals. This is their demo tape, self released and limited to 50 copies though I've heard a second pressing is on the way. Sounds like a total wall of noise but the more I play it the clearer it becomes. Looking forward to hearing what comes next from these guys. There's a hand full available from No Patience or you can wait for the second press to get released.

I was lucky enough to see Iron Lung play last night in Perth which is where I picked up two versions of this tour 7". It's a one sided record with three songs which includes a Sex Vid cover. The red vinyl is the second press and the glow in the dark vinyl is the third press.

Sonic Youth - Dead Moon Rising

Recent re-master of Sonic Youth's classic album from 1985. I think this was the first album I bought of theirs, not when it first came out mind you, I'm old but not that old. The collaboration with Lydia Lunch on the last track "Death Valley 69" is easily one of my favorite Sonic Youth songs. This was done by ORG Music, the same folks that did the Nirvana vinyl reissues. They make some really amazing sounding vinyl, when you hear an audiophile pressing like this it's such a difference to some of the cheap paper thin vinyl some labels press. The orange 180 gram vinyl is limited to 200 copies. You can get it from Insound or the Sonic Youth webstore.

Low Threat Profile - Product #2

I've had this for awhile but it's been buried under stacks of other records and I'd almost forgotten about it. No doubt everyone's heard all about this band by now, a Power Violence super group with members of Infest, No Comment and Lack Of Interest. This is their second release aptly titled Product #2. Recorded in 2000 with vocals laid down 10 years later. The white vinyl was limited to 100 copies for mail order from Deep Six Records but there's still some black copies available.
